What is IV Rank and how is it calculated?

IV Rank measures where current implied volatility stands relative to its 52-week range, expressed as a percentage from 0 to 100. It is calculated as (Current IV - 52-week Low IV) / (52-week High IV - 52-week Low IV) × 100. An IV Rank of 80 means current IV is near the top of its annual range, suggesting options are relatively expensive.

What is the difference between IV Rank and IV Percentile?

IV Rank measures where current IV falls within its high-low range over the past year. IV Percentile measures the percentage of trading days in the past year that had lower IV than today. A stock with IV Percentile of 90 means IV was lower than today on 90% of trading days. IV Percentile is generally considered more robust because it accounts for the distribution of IV values, not just the extremes.

What does high implied volatility mean for options traders?

High implied volatility means options are priced with a larger expected price range, making option premiums more expensive. This generally favors options sellers who collect higher premiums and benefit if actual price movement (realized volatility) is less than what was implied. Options buyers face a higher bar — the stock must move significantly to overcome the elevated premium paid.

How do you use IV Rank to decide when to sell options?

Selling options is generally more favorable when IV Rank is above 50, indicating options are priced above the midpoint of their historical range. Strategies like iron condors, credit spreads, and strangles benefit from high IV Rank because the elevated premium provides a larger margin of safety. When IV Rank is below 30, buying strategies like debit spreads or straddles may be more appropriate.
