Cursor reads MCP servers from a small JSON file. Point it at the hosted server and sign in through the browser, or run the local client with a token.
The hosted server, recommended

ApexVol runs the server. Cursor signs in to your ApexVol account through the browser, so nothing is installed and no token is copied anywhere.
- Create ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project, or .cursor/mcp.json inside one project, with the block below.
- Open Cursor Settings, then MCP. The apexvol entry appears with a prompt to log in.
- Click it. A browser tab opens on apexvol.com. Sign in and approve the read-only request.

Cursor calls the tool and answers from live data.- Read-only. The connector can read options analytics on your behalf and nothing else. It cannot see billing or change your account.
- Use the apex form of the URL, apexvol.com without www. The www form fails the audience check on purpose.
- Approving creates a token you can see and revoke under Account, then API Access.

The open-source apexvol-mcp package runs as a small process Cursor starts for you. It needs Python 3.10 or newer and an API token.
- Install the client: pipx install apexvol-mcp (plain pip works too). Python 3.10 or newer.
- Create a token under Account, then API Access. It starts with avmcp_ and is shown once.
- Check it before touching any config: APEXVOL_API_TOKEN=avmcp_... apexvol-mcp --check prints the version, the auth result and your remaining budget.
- Use the block below instead, so Cursor starts apexvol-mcp itself and passes the token in the environment.
- Toggle the server on under Settings, then MCP. The tool list fills in once it is running.

Where does Cursor look for mcp.json?
In ~/.cursor/mcp.json for a global setup and in .cursor/mcp.json at the project root for a per-project one. Both can exist; project entries add to the global ones.
Does Cursor support the hosted server's sign-in?
Yes. Cursor supports remote MCP servers over HTTP with OAuth. When the entry shows it needs a login, clicking it opens the browser flow on apexvol.com.
Will the agent call the tools on its own?
In agent mode, yes, when a question needs market data. You can also name the tool. Ask for the IV rank and the agent calls get_iv_rank and reads the JSON back to you.
Is there a limit on tool calls?
The same limits as the API: 60 requests a minute, 1,000 an hour and a monthly budget per account. An agent loop on a watchlist is fine; scraping the universe is what the limits are sized against.
