VS Code reads MCP servers from .vscode/mcp.json and exposes their tools to Copilot agent mode. Hosted over HTTP with a browser sign-in, or local with a token.

ApexVol runs the server. VS Code signs in to your ApexVol account through the browser, so nothing is installed and no token is copied anywhere.
- Create .vscode/mcp.json in the workspace with the block below, or run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette and choose HTTP.
- Click Start above the server entry. VS Code opens a browser tab on apexvol.com for sign-in.
- Approve the read-only request, then open Copilot Chat in agent mode.

VS Code calls the tool and answers from live data.- Read-only. The connector can read options analytics on your behalf and nothing else. It cannot see billing or change your account.
- Use the apex form of the URL, apexvol.com without www. The www form fails the audience check on purpose.
- Approving creates a token you can see and revoke under Account, then API Access.

The open-source apexvol-mcp package runs as a small process VS Code starts for you. It needs Python 3.10 or newer and an API token.
- Install the client: pipx install apexvol-mcp (plain pip works too). Python 3.10 or newer.
- Create a token under Account, then API Access. It starts with avmcp_ and is shown once.
- Check it before touching any config: APEXVOL_API_TOKEN=avmcp_... apexvol-mcp --check prints the version, the auth result and your remaining budget.
- Use the stdio block below instead. VS Code starts apexvol-mcp and passes the token from the env block.
- Prefer not to commit the token? Declare it as an input in the same file and VS Code prompts for it once.

Which VS Code setup do I need for MCP?
A current VS Code with GitHub Copilot and agent mode enabled. MCP servers are configured in .vscode/mcp.json for a workspace or in your user settings for every workspace.
Does VS Code handle the sign-in for the hosted server?
Yes. HTTP servers that require OAuth trigger a browser sign-in when you start them. Approve on apexvol.com and VS Code stores the session.
How do I keep the token out of the repository?
Use the inputs mechanism in mcp.json: declare an input for the token and reference it from the env block. VS Code prompts for the value once and stores it securely.
Can I use the tools outside Copilot?
Any MCP-capable extension in VS Code sees the same server. Copilot agent mode is the one that ships with VS Code.
